Hello, everyone. The day has finally arrived and it is time to begin The Great Oppo Hunt. For anyone who hasn’t signed up yet, you can still sign up any time before the game ends. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

First, a brief forward. I’ve gotta say, creating this hunt was harder than I expected it to be. I’ve organized a couple scavenger hunts before, but because they were in a specific, small area I was able to focus on unique one-off landmarks that were fascinating in their weirdness. A giant functioning jack-in-the-box made out of a grain silo, a field of toy horses, the grave of a man jailed for his full luxurious beard, Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg. Creating a big list of cool, bizarre, unique stuff in a small area is easy. Creating a list of things that can be found nationwide but still have that element of odd fascination is much harder. Hopefully I still managed to capture that element of fascination and fun with the list I’ve compiled here. More than anything though, I hope you have fun.

First, a quick reminder of how this works. By now you should have an Instagram and a mascot. You will need to take a photo of your mascot at the scavenger locations and post the photo to your Instagram. All posts must include the following (order of the items doesn’t matter):

*Place name (if applicable). I.E. “Bash Bish Falls” or “Hoosac Tunnel.”
*Location (town and state)

More points are always more better. Throughout the event 24/48 hour challenges will be posted on the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! All these challenges will be doable from any location, and often from within your own home if you so choose, but you’ll have to complete them within 1 or 2 days of the challenge being posted. These challenges will not be posted in Oppositelock, they will only be on Instagram, so be sure to keep an eye on the Oppo Rally account.

Alright, alright. Here’s what you’ve really been looking for, the list of scavenger hunt items. Some will be easy to find, some will be hard, some will require a day trip for certain players. While I’ve attempted to fill the scavenger list with things that can be found across the country I realize that there’s no way to ensure distribution of the items on the list is even for everyone. The point of the game is to just give y’all an excuse to get out of the house and do a little exploring.

The list is broken into categories, simply for organizational purposes. Unlike a traditional Oppo Rally, completing a category will not yield bonus points.

Note: You are not allowed to submit the same location for multiple scavenger checkpoints, even if the location meets the description for multiple checkpoints.

FOR CANADIAN PLAYERS: We’ve had a number of Canadian entrants into the Great Oppo Hunt. Unfortunately some of the items on the scavenger list are strictly American (they’ll be pretty obvious when you see them). At the bottom of the scavenger list there is a “Canadian Substitution List.” You may substitute any of the strictly American items with any item from this list.

So, if I get this right, #oppohuntdoubledip is when you get to get 75% of the points for an item you submitted of your choosing?

Question: Suppose I take a photo of Ally the Altoids tin in front of an abandoned Corvair I know of. I would use the tags #JunkyardGold60s, #HorseBehindTheCart, and #CoolantSucks? Is there a limit to the number of categories something could fit into?

Question: Suppose I go and shoot 5 pictures at once. Should each be in a separate post or could I go and say picture 1: #CoolantSucks; an abandoned Corvair, picture 2: #MufflerManInvasion, etc?

Question: Most Muffler Men are made of scrap, which is another category. Are these banned from being the same picture?

1. Correct on the double dip. So, for example, you could score a dinosaur statue, then put a second dinosaur in the double dip for 75% dinosaur points.

2. You can only score one checkpoint per item. So you can’t knock off three items with a single car.

3. I’ll allow photos posted as a group as long as you specify what each is in the description

4. Muffler Men are not scrap, they're fiberglass (check the Muffler Men links)

2. Ah, gotcha. So since there are two abandoned Corvairs, I could chose one for #CoolantSucks and another for #HorseBehindTheCart? Is there any rule about photographing individual items in one location?

4. H m , I was thinking of the scrap sculptures of metal men holding mufflers that are around , not the proper fiberglass ones. Roadside America has a tracking chart and there is one very very close, so it isn’t really a problem.

I submitted a photo of an infamously creepy grave in one category. The grave was inside a cemetery I submitted as an Atlas Obscura grab bag item. That’s allowed, right?

If the cemetery as a whole is an Atlas Obscura location then I think that has to be an either/or kind of thing. I hate to be picky on this one because I already saw the photos you posted and they’re stunning. I’d suggest scoring it for the grave, since more Atlas locations is probably the easier thing to find between the two.

Hahah, yeah, I am stuck 2.5 hours from home working out of town and left the actual patch mascot at the house. I printed it out at the hotel so o could get a few of these instead of sitting around in a hotel room.

Now I have to research what car it is. I’m guessing prewar since the restaurant is called 20’s hideout. Is closed due to fire and the construction rebuild.

Okay, I’ll remove the one. It is a pretty famous grave in a pretty famous cemetery so maybe I shouldn’t have thought I’d get away with it. All the local Obscura locations are already something else.

Clarification please: For Longest River, is that longest river as on ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest_rivers_in_the_United_States_by_state ), or is it longest river run within the state. More specifically, can I use the Charles, which is like two blocks away instead of the Connecticut and Housatonic, which are on the other side of the state, but have shorter runs within the state? Or should I cheat and visit the Blackstone river in Massachusetts, which is Rhode Island’s longest river by wikipedia?
